Watercolor Batik on Rice Paper - Weekend Intensive

Learn both beginning and intermediate techniques of how to create watercolor batiks on fine rice paper. Come prepared on the first day with a sketch up to 8" x 10" and a photograph or other source of your inspiration. Each student will paint up to two original batiks inspired by their own imagination. Join in the fun of this new watercolor technique! Basic experience with watercolor is required.

What to Bring
What To Bring: All of the supplies detailed MUST be brought to the 1st day of class: 1. Photo or other inspiration for painting (plan on a relatively simple composition and sketch for your first batik painting) 2. Sketching pencils, kneaded eraser, fine tip sharpie 3. Bring a sketch, up to 8 x 10”, of what you want to paint. 4. Watercolor supplies (paints, brushes, water containers, palette) 5. Freezer Paper (carried at your grocery store) 6. Scissors 7. Painter’s tape 8. Foam board/Masonite board to tape painting onto (needs to be at least 4 inches larger than painting in each dimension 9. 2 Old watercolor brushes for wax: one should be a small round (about size 1), the other one a slightly larger round. If anyone has a 3” house painting brush which won’t loose it’s bristles too easily (one that would apply wax smoothly)—this is also needed. 10. Newspaper (3 days worth for each painting) or 8 sheets of plain newsprint or craft paper the size of your painting (for each painting). 11. Hair blow-dryer (We will need a couple of these for the class to share) and extension cord. 12. Tarp 13. Paper Towels. MUST BRING THESE. ASLD will provide: Rice paper—Just for your info it will be Thai Unryu white 25 g for your first batik. Paraffin wax Irons Ironning Surface Pad It will take about one class to finish your first batik. Upon completing this batik you may either start a second batik the same size on Unryu, or Ginwashi (has more texture/fibers). (In the future, after this class, these papers can be ordered through www.theartshoppe.net or www.mulberrypaperandmore.com). Paper Towels. MUST BRING THESE.
