Portrait Painting, Part 1

Workshop

Ages: 18 - No Limit

Ability: Beginner Intermediate

Expertise: Painting

The goal of this workshop is to paint a portrait a week. Continuous painting is by far the most effective way to improve creativity and image making skills. The small, intimate six by six inch paintings of ordinary people create a structural framework for which you can develop your portraiture skills. Students will use photographs of individuals they know such as family and friends or candid pictures of people they encounter as their subjects for this class. Students will also have the opportunity to paint from observation using live models. This class includes a combination of demonstrations, in-class exercises and individual instruction teaching students how to observe facial features, measure proportions, render accurate value structure and mix skin tones. Using oil paint, students will discover approaches to simplify the process of painting and ways to stay inspired and motivated. Discussing strategies to practice painting every day (or almost every day) will also be covered throughout the workshop. SPECIAL NOTE: This is an oil painting workshop.
